Reports of the zine's death have been greatly exaggerated, and this weekend's stacked gathering of small-press indies and self-publishers is Exhibit A. The Chicago Zine Fest kicks off with a reading at Quimby's, featuring national zinesters and local flame-keepers, among them the Ignatz-winning microcomic John Porcellino (King-Cat Comics) and Anne Elizabeth Moore (Brandalism, ex-Punk Planet). An art opening and screening of the traveling Gadabout Fim Festival follows at Johalla Projects. The best comes last with Saturday's tabled exhibitions and workshops. Highlights include venerable local activists 826CHI and AREA Chicago, and special guests Jeffrey Brown (McSweeney's, Best American Comics) and Lilli Carré (The Believer).
