Doc Films says…

Christopher Maclaine's manic films reflect his short, tragic life — addicted to speed and meth, the lesser-known beat poet died at the age of 51 in an asylum. The few films he left behind pioneered the ruptured narrative and choppy, rapid-fire imagery for which subsequent avant-garde luminary Stan Brakhage is known. Maclaine's apocalyptic magnum opus, The End (1953), is his longest film, clocking in at 35 minutes, and is composed of six sections that follow as many characters during the last days of their lives. The Man Who Invented Gold (1957) is a rhapsodic, jarring ode to the alchemy of film that, despite being decidedly avant-garde, remains grounded in Maclaine's earnest expressiveness. Also screening: Beat (1958, 6m) and Scotch Hop (1959, 6m).
