Featuring the collaborative work of Karl Haendel & Walead Beshty, Sheree Hovsepian, and Chicago photographer Barbara Kasten, the current group show at Monique Meloche presents abstraction as the secret language between painting, photography, and sculpture. While Kasten's photograph compositions and interest in texture are traditionally left up to painting, the astral depictions in Hovsepian's painting — using nails and string — feels curiously like sculpture. Mitigating the fluid boundaries of each discipline, the crisp minimalism and stark compositions highlight the overlapping formal concerns between the works.

moniquemeloche gallery says…

Monique Meloche says: This group exhibition considers three different manifestations of black and white photographic abstraction, each questioning the apparent boundaries of the "imitative" medium by introducing the plurality and rich histories of other artistic genres. Though still concerned with the photographic process, these artists look outside the medium to further the discourse around abstract photography.
