At its height in the '60s and '70s, avant-garde film didn't exactly command big audiences, but its non-narrative styles and strategies have come to echo, at times, through mainstream culture and have even filtered into the indie-music sphere, where bands like Animal Collective and Dan Deacon go experimental with video. That's simply to say that a broader set of film or music fans today might find the work of our more out-there film artists to be a stimulating (and not unfamiliar) experience. Try Potter-Belmar Labs' "live cinema" gig tonight. The duo is active in developing a dynamic, performance-based kind of cinema, often saddling up the laptop and using DJ-like maneuvers of live mixing and pop-culture sampling.

Chicago Filmmakers says:

Potter-Belmar Labs is Leslie Raymond and Jason Jay Stevens, collaborating artists since 1999. Their brand of "live cinema" incorporates mixed image and sound elements and audience participation. The result is a bit like a rock concert — well-practiced riffs mated with inspired improvisation — to create a spectacle unlike any you've ever seen. They build as they go, weaving field recordings with threads sampled from pop culture and their own rich sound and image compositions.
