All four playwrights appearing at today's discussion tackle culturally weighted subject matter. Also in common: they're among the best dramatists working today. (Each one has, at one time, been recommended in these pages.) Tarell Alvin McCraney's New Orleans tragicomedy, The Brother/Sister Plays, runs now at Steppenwolf; fellow New Dramatist Young Jean Lee brings The Shipment to the MCA for its Chicago debut later this week. Also speaking: Kristoffer Diaz (The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity) and Tanya Saracho, who thanks to a recent Mellon Grant, will debut two new works for Steppenwolf within a couple of years. The quartet discuss their work, and it's effect on the broader theatre world (spoiler: it improves it big time).
