The Modern Dance, which David Thomas and his current enfants Ubu revisit live tonight, sits alongside Wire's Pink Flag and Are We Not Men? by fellow Ohioans Devo — punk debuts by chronological default, but artistically already well into post-punk's weirdo hinterlands. Thirty years later, classics such as "Non-Alignment Pact" and "Street Waves" sound like a perfect soundtrack for the Great Recession: the urban-derelict synth hisses and grotesque humor staring back at false cultural/political promises with intelligent loathing. The performance also includes selections from Long Live Père Ubu!, the soundtrack album to Thomas' Brothers Quay-assisted adaptation of Ubu Roi, the band's proto-Absurdist namesake.
