Past Lives are entirely composed of former Blood Brothers (guitarist Devin Welch played on their very early singles), but very few sonic remnants survive from the screamy, agitated hardcore of old. Even the rave-ups on Tapestry of Webs, their full-length debut (Suicide Squeeze, 2010), live closer to the anxious, post-Sonic Youth no-wave of Welch's old band, Shoplifting. Singer Jordan Billie's vocal shift is the most unexpectedly welcome departure: his shriek/mock-croon replaced with a nuanced range. While the other ex-Bros. in Jaguar Love yield diminishing returns, clutching to the vamp-glam aspect of their Blood-line, Past Lives have found something to make their name happily ironic: a new beginning.
