“Blaming Ed Paschke for Jeff Koons makes about as much sense as blaming Nietzsche for Mussolini. Regardless of how one responds to Paschke's polarizing former assistant — who, incidentally, curated a Paschke exhibition that opened last week at Gagosian — there's little denying his ex-boss' mastery over the post-Pop landscape. Among the greatest of the Chicago Imagists, Paschke's vivid, implicitly political paintings still communicate a discomfiting push-and-pull between media and reality, countering their instant visual gratification. Russell Bowman trots out selections of Paschke's work on almost yearly basis, but if it takes some cross-country hype run-off to get the gallery full, so be it.”
