Young Jean Lee's The Shipment was something of a sensation before it had even premiered. Lee, a Korean-American playwright, had written a characteristically provocative canvass of black-identity politics; and the sold-out workshop performances were a mere prelude to the near-universal acclaim that accompanied The Shipment's NYC arrival last year. In the first two acts, Lee upends minstrel-show stereotypes with deadpan direction and truth-to-power revelations. The final act ups the meta with an Albee-style dinner party and a bold final reveal. Lee's experimental work remains confrontational, but not combative; funny, but far from frivolous — an inspired framework for a necessary dialogue in "post-racial" America.
