Before Don Draper, there was Roger Thornhill — the superhumanly suave ad executive all the boys want to be and all the women want to be with. Not a bad hand if (like his Mad Men descendant) he could only shake that nasty case of identity confusion that keeps tripping him up. Of course, in Hitchcock's classic adventure thriller, Cary Grant's Thornhill is the victim, not the perpetrator. James Mason and Martin Landau both take that role, hunting down the perceived spy/murderer with sadistic merriment. To clear his name, Grant famously runs the gauntlet from a cropduster-plane attack to a chase across Mt. Rushmore, while finding time, of course, to woo Eva Marie Saint's double agent. Even Draper ain't that good.
