Any of the millions who forwarded "Dramatic Chipmunk" know that viral videos' appeal lies in having a shared experience. At the same time, we've all heard our share of Adorno Jr.'s deride YouTube's supposedly common links as nothing more than screen-fatigued acts of alienation. YouTube Assembly understands all of this; but more than a public exhibition of, say, "David After Dentist" for maximum aw-shucks lolz, the Homeroom-presented screenings function as part sociological investigation. Tonight's theme is fan culture, with local video artist/curator Jesse McLean exploring the modern relationship between devoted objects and their devotees (crunkcore screamo covers of Justin Bieber, anyone?). Don't forget to Send to a Friend!

The Nightingale says…

Homeroom says
Homeroom presents the YouTube Assembly hosted by Jesse McLean at the Nightingale. The YouTube Assembly consists of screening web-based video for a live and participating audience. Each event features a guest host presenting a collection of YouTube clips that elaborate on a project or theme in which they have some expertise or interest. In the spirit of the popular YouTube interface, audience members are encouraged to comment on the videos they watch, except out loud and in real time with no anonymity. Thematically based around fan culture, this screening will take a look at both fans and fan-created videos. Jesse McLean's work is motivated by a deep curiosity about human behavior and relationships, especially as presented and observed through the mediation of found footage. Her work has been shown extensively throughout Chicago, as well as numerous film festivals around the country and beyond.
