“Norwegian pedal-pushers Serena Maneesh foreshadowed the shoegaze revival by a good five years with their 2005 self-titled, full-length debut. The time passed between then and S-M 2: Abyss in B Minor (2010) has allowed like-minded scuzz-and-fuzz acts to eclipse their once considerable exposure; but they were clearly busy during that interval, crafting a painstakingly produced record almost intimidating in its wall-of-noise density. The sleeve acknowledges no less than five Overdub credits and two Spiritual Advisors — which pretty much says it all. A monolithic slab of acid rock, doom, narcotic psychedelic, and much more, S-M 2 achieves transcendence from sheer sonic overload. With any luck, the live translation will match the studio wizardry. Get there early for locals Apteka, no slouches themselves in the high-volume shoegaze department.”
