Norwegian pedal-pushers Serena Maneesh foreshadowed the shoegaze revival by a good five years with their 2005 self-titled, full-length debut. The time passed between then and S-M 2: Abyss in B Minor (2010) has allowed like-minded scuzz-and-fuzz acts to eclipse their once considerable exposure; but they were clearly busy during that interval, crafting a painstakingly produced record almost intimidating in its wall-of-noise density. The sleeve acknowledges no less than five Overdub credits and two Spiritual Advisors — which pretty much says it all. A monolithic slab of acid rock, doom, narcotic psychedelic, and much more, S-M 2 achieves transcendence from sheer sonic overload. With any luck, the live translation will match the studio wizardry. Get there early for locals Apteka, no slouches themselves in the high-volume shoegaze department.

Bottom Lounge says:
Serena Maneesh (sometimes spelled Serena-Maneesh or shortened to S-M) is an alternative rockband from Oslo, Norway. The team of musicians who each contribute to the band's sound is organized around its main protagonist and songwriter Emil Nikolaisen. Emil has previously appeared as a guitarist and songwriter in the indie band Royal, played the drums in Norwegian punk rock band Silver as well as in the retro-pop orchestra The Loch Ness Mouse. He even has a past as guitarist in the metal band Extol.
