For the past 20 years, Stephin Merritt has cultivated a reputation as a suffer-no-fools mope, but one thing the Magnetic Fields architect clearly likes is a good concept. Realism (Nonesuch, 2010) is stripped of 69 Love Songs' synths and the Jesus and Mary Chain-inspired feedback that drenched 2008's Distortion in favor of '70s acoustic folk-pop and British pastoralism. The affecting bon mots and effortless melodies, of course, remain unchanged. Coupled with the recent surfacing of Merritt's early recordings and an upcoming years-in-the-make doc, now seems like the most fruitful time to be a Fields fan in over a decade. Just remember to keep your applause hushed.
