Chatter about the demise of the music video trickled off as the form took to a new home online. Far more interesting is that longer music movies, from rock docs to concert films, seem to be surging too. Enter the Chicago International Movies and Music Festival. Their entire four-day schedule is promising (Of Montreal, off-the-cuff!) but a solid double feature seems a good place to start. Indie filmmaker Rian Johnson (Brick) captures the much-adored Mountain Goats playing their new album, The Life of the World to Come. Then Mogwai get an amazing, blazing concert treatment from Vincent Moon, the hand behind Le Blogotheque (still one of our favorite time-sinks on the internet).
