Pattern Is Movement scaled back from a quintet in 2008, but the Philly duo somehow sounds more expansive than before. On their last album, All Together (Hometapes), keyboardist Andrew Thiboldeaux plonks out Terry Riley-style repetitive lines, then coasts along Eno's warm jets; and drummer Chris Ward spices up the skittering shuffles with proggy fills and time-signature shifts — usually all within the same song. It all sounds oddly inviting, like the most approachable bit of post-rocky electronics that Thrill Jockey never released. They're big and scruffy fellas, looking more like plumbers than indie rockers. And when they bash it out live, all the strange analog burbles and left-field dynamics sound as steadily workmanlike as Thiboldeaux and Ward appear.
