“The Cultural Center's company-in-residence celebrates its silver anniversary with a premiere from Founder/Artistic Director Jan Bartoszek, Dance of Forgotten Steps, coupled with two Chicago debuts. Andrea Miller, whose work with Gallim Dance netted a Dance Magazine "25 to Watch" nod last year, showcases the Hedwig-commissioned Dust, a stripped-down male duet; and on the heels of Hubbard Street's mounting of Susan Marshall's repertory fave Kiss, the venerable, shape-shifting choreographer presents selections from her ambitious Sawdust Palace Suite, an even more elaborate medley of vaudeville and cabaret, humor and sensuality.”
The Dance Center of Columbia College says:
Hedwig Dances' bold, interdisciplinary collaborations resonate with complexity and depth, combining poetic choreography with sculptural artifacts, projected images and haunting original music. Celebrating their 25th Anniversary, critically acclaimed and award winning Hedwig Dances honors women choreographers with three premieres. Andrea Miller, former dancer with Ensemble Batsheva of Isreal and Director of Gallim Dance in New York City premieres Dust, a striking duet created especially for Hedwig that addresses mortality and the fragility of life. World-renowned MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow and New York City-based choreographer Susan Marshall sets sections of her Sawdust Palace Suite on the company, blending vaudeville, cabaret and humor in a Fellini-esque suite of dances. And Artistic Director Jan Bartoszek premieres Dance of Forgotten Steps, which delves into memory, identity and the influence on the living of those who have gone before, featuring a video installation by collaborator Petra Bachmaler of luftwerk, who transforms the stage into a vibrant illuminated realm.
