“Like William Eggleston, who provides the cover photo for Spoon's latest batch of taut, kinetic pop, Britt Daniels and co. have risen to hallowed ranks, pulling dazzling colors from, let's face it, fairly commonplace means. They're classicist riff-rockers, planted on perhaps the most major of all indie labels, forever grooving on the old guitar-bass-drums-piano setup; but the economy and tension embedded in Transference, like nearly everything with which they've preceded, sounds timeless, never rote. It's telling that an album billed as loose and rough-hewn still pops with so much tight rhythm. Even on pseudo-sloppy British Invasion runs like "Trouble Came Running," the packaging is vacuum-sealed. For Spoon fans, that's just the way we get by.”
