“DCA offers a boldly innovative if somewhat heavy-handed revival of the classic musical. The setting is hedonistic Weimar Berlin, just before and during the Nazis' rise to power, centered around the burlesque Kit Kat Klub and a wide-eyed American novelist. The Hypocrites' standard punk-rock ethos is an easy match for this revisionist adaptation, which emphasizes the darkness and sexiness in every line and action of the production. Sometimes the exaggerted sentiment borders on overkill, but the theatricality of the show saves it from affectation. The set is a restrained bare stage, with visible catwalks and exposed brick, and the cast's smart interactions with an especially strong band keep the show dramatically interesting.”
