“Allison Schulnik's trademark exaggerated impasto approach to painting — as sculptural as it is pictorial — finds a macabre and haunting application in her latest show, Home for Hobo Too. Taking abject outsider figures, from melancholy clowns to hobos, as subjects, Schulnik avoids cliché by emphasizing the darkness of her characters, while at the same time exploring their tragicomic potential and exploring the line between playful semi-farce and sincerity. (Chances are you've seen that MO play out in her claymation video for Grizzly Bear's "Ready, Able.") Her thick, messy surfaces are overloaded and overworked like the symbols she uses, but with equally unconventional effects.”
