“Originally known for her sculpture and installations, in the last decade prolific multimedia artist Judy Pfaff has turned to the world of landscapes, pushing the boundaries of how they can be portrayed in her first solo show in Chicago. Monumental collages are studies in excess, with overwhelming masses of material ranging from burned aluminum foil to artificial flowers combined with paper, all drenched in sometimes garish combinations. Spectacular in nature, the show's play between two and three dimensionality also pushes on cerebral questions of the limits of representation. Elements of assemblage pieces seem poised to spill from their canvas, and the display of some pieces in shadow boxes reference frenetic dioramas.”
