Renowned writer and artist Romare Bearden's profuse output came from his work as an oil painter, cartoonist, art editor, costume designer for Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater, and social advocate. However, Bearden is best known for his innovative collages, which arose from his frustration with the mid-20th century's preoccupation with abstraction and its inability to express the material, historical reality of the African-American experience. Bearden quickly became an innovative collagist, creating vibrantly tactile and socially conscious art whose scraps and magazine clippings make manifest black culture's process of self-actualization.

Chicago Cultural Center says…

Cultural Center says: Throughout all his art, Romare Bearden wove a rich tapestry of literary, biblical, mythological, popular culture, and western and non-western references informed by his African-American cultural experiences. Possibly best known for his collage works, Bearden often worked and reworked those original images into astounding prints. He pushed the process with his artistic imagination using experimental techniques, sizes, and colors. The extraordinary versatility is visible in this exhibition's approximate 75 lithographs, etchings, and prints drawn from Bearden's three decades of graphic work.
