Carl Hammer's featured artist at Art Chicago 2010, David Sharpe creates paintings on various scales that effectively represent the gallery's promotion of self-taught and intuitive artists — while consistently widening the boundaries of who gets represented in this group. David Sharpe's vivacious work is in some ways classically outsider, with childlike figures, obsessive detailing, and flattened perspective (the landscapes, done in watercolor, immediately recall Joseph Yoakum in particular). But Sharpe's work is also dynamic and relationship-based, with subjects that interact with each other and stylistic influences that show Sharpe to be in conversation with the art world at large.

Carl Hammer Gallery says…

Carl Hammer says: Carl Hammer Gallery is once again honored to present the painting mastery of artist David Sharpe to the Chicago art community and to the visiting public from Art Chicago 2010. The imagination of Sharpe's palette of landscapes and figurative forms knows no boundary lines. His intuitive senses are uncanny, as if he were working purely from an instinctive, compulsive-obsessive tradition. Yet Sharpe remains in control throughout utilizing a display of dynamic interaction with ideas and subjects, all drawn from daily experiences while also addressing the traditions of painting both academic and outsider.
