Even for a company as reputable as Lifeline, which is poised to go Ben Hur on the Jeffs with 13 nominations, a stage adaptation of Neverwhere is an ambitious undertaking. The dense allusion and fancy of Neil Gaiman's novel/miniseries — in which a Joe Cubicle finds himself thrust into a fantastical netherworld, London Below — isn't particularly hospitable to Non-Equity theatre. But Lifeline pulls it off, with characteristic aplomb, by narrowing its focus on Neverwhere's central conceit: the stranger-in-a-strange-land meets hero's journey. (One could argue that its less moralistic tone is actually an improvement.) It's spectacular when it needs to be and otherwise driven by character and imaginative variations on archetype. The actors are uniformly captivating, with command turns from lead Robert Kauzlaric (who also adapted the script) and the time-traveling, scene-stealing assassins Vandemar and Croup.
