Exploring issues of security in a time of terror, Sarah Pickering's MoCP survey show, Incident Control, draws upon her vivid, disquieting new monograph, Explosions, Fires, and Public Order, which goes behind the scenes at training sites for British government forces. Pickering's striking photographs of fake bombs for war training, controlled fires for crime-scene investigators, charred interiors for firefighting preparation, and fabricated towns for plotting police and military battles document realistic situations in a carefully staged environment. Last week's Flavorwire slideshow covered a broad cross-section of Pickering's photos; but to feel the full blowback, you need to witness these oversized prints face-to-face.

Museum of Contemporary Photography says…

MoCP says: Sarah Pickering's photographs disturb our sense of security and illuminate the ways in which we cope with traumatic events that are beyond our control. Her pictures depict environments and events crafted specifically for simulated training to prepare police officers, firefighters, and soldiers for calamities ranging from fire and civil unrest to terrorism and war. By exposing the absurdity and controlled nature of these environments, Pickering's images reveal our predilection to deflect fear by trying to anticipate and plan for it — and our tendency to create a story to help us process it.
