George Grosz, brutal caricaturist of the Weimar Republic and important member of Dada and New Objectivity in 1920s Germany, emigrated in 1933 to the United States, a country for which he had a strong love throughout his life, just before Hitler came to power. After moving to New York, he rejected the savage caricatures of German politics for which he is now known and turned to more conventional paintings. The new show of his American work at the Arts Club of Chicago provides a demonstrative mix of the artist's oeuvre, combining overt anti-fascist themes with expressionistic and abstract paintings.
