“In between, You and I, there is space all around us is the appropriate title of Junko Yamamoto's show at EC Gallery: the artist's abstract paintings and prints are as concerned with empty space as they are with figure and representation. (The collection of paintings, significantly, are labeled the "Shunyata Series," after the Sanskrit word for "emptiness.") Yamamoto, a Tokyo-born, Seattle-based artist, creates delicate layers of meditative color through groupings of rounded shapes, flowers, and abstract ovals, evoking both organic growth and landscapes. The peeling layers and street-art elements, meanwhile, work as a simultaneous complement and contrast.”
