“The name Cattywampus perfectly captures Seattle artist Rich Lehl’s surreal narrative paintings. They combine elements of the subconscious and the mysterious in a way that's witty, but slightly askew, coupled with a detailed realism that's even more eerie in the work's cleanliness. The strongest paintings depict men in unfortunate relationships with landscapes they've made unnatural: a man masturbates while watering a row of perfectly shaped trees in "Gardening with Joe," while another in "The Line Maker" creates a disordered, curlicue chalk-line in an endless parking lot.”
