“In the MCA's latest exhibit, an astutely chosen collection of works on paper depict exaggerated conflict, addressing various allegorical, emblematic, and metaphorical battles. The work ranges in medium and content; representations of literal war include Mike Kelley's dark, tragic-comic Disembodied Militarism cartoon of war talk without bodies; Laylah Ali's imagined narratives of attacks by little green men; and Henry Darger's classic multimedia depictions of the Vivian Girls battling the Glandelinians. Karen Kilimnik's subversive fashion sketches of femininity are just as confrontational, as are SST great Raymond Pettibon's understated, sharp windows on estrangement.”
