“Next Theatre's collaboration with the Loyola theater school is a profound success in imaginative technical theater. The plot, based on the novel by Karel Capek (author of the brilliant play R.U.R. and coiner of the word "robot"), is scathing social satire: a species of humanoid newts are colonized and put to work doing manual labor all over the world; of course, they eventually rebel. The show does the story justice. It's equal parts dark comedy and arresting images (including some brilliant puppets by Michael Montenegro), and it boasts an impressive set that takes on and matches the epic scope of the story.”
