“You may have heard the breaking news that record stores are having trouble. Given the twin effects of digital downloads and a slumping economy, you have to root for any music outlet that stares into that abyss, flips it the bird, and goes defiantly brick-and-mortar. Patrick Monaghan, head of the veteran indie distributor Carrot Top Records (Handsome Family, Archer Prewitt), is doing just that with saki, a new shop that opens today in West Logan Square. The store carries vinyl, CDs, books, and magazines — with the emphasis on vinyl. They're promising semi-regular in-stores, too, the first of which kicks off this weekend's grand opening. Saturday's guests include Poison Arrows, White Mystery, and Steve Krakow (DJ set); DJs Barry Phipps (the Coctails) and Rian Murphy (Drag City) are among Sunday's slate; and CHIRP DJs spin at noon both days.”
