“Minneapolis punk quintet STNNNG have built a strong critical reputation over the last few years for their art-damaged post-hardcore. Their Touch and Go-style discordance comes packaged with plenty of appropriate guitar squall and carnival-barker zeal, the latter courtesy of front man Chris Besinger. But listening back, it's clear that his lyrics are the ace in the hole — touched by Beefhearty non-sequitur, Burroughs cut-up, and mercurial quasi-narrative couplets. So while, on first glance, Besinger lacks the name recognition deserving of a lyrics/poetry chapbook, it makes sense. If The Usual Beast doesn't hold up on the page, there's some great music to be heard today, too. Besinger performs with his improvisational no-wave unit, Group Icky Rats; and speaking of art-damaged, the decades-running local treasures ONO appear — hands down the greatest performance-spectacle, post-punk, queer-positive, avant-industrial band Chicago has ever birthed.”
