“For live theatre, it's about as close to a no-fail combination as you can get: critically acclaimed director David Cromer, known for his challenging, bracing remounts of classic American plays in both Chicago and now New York, returns to one of his most successful theatrical homes, Writers' Theater, where he last directed an acclaimed production of Picnic (which will open on Broadway later in the 2010-2011 season). Now, Cromer takes on Tennessee Williams' classic tragedy about Blanche DuBois and the ruin she wreaks on her sister and volatile brother-in-law one stifling New Orleans summer. Cromer's treatment of the play is adept and bold where so many revivals are timid in the face of the show's status, and while Natasha Lowe steals the show with a complex, subtle desperation, other actors bring exciting new interpretations to old roles, resulting in a poetic and fresh revival.”
