On the heels of Redmoon's revival of Cabinet — their beloved, charmingly bizarre retelling of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari — the puppet masters team up with the Chicago Humanities Festival for what looks to be an early highlight of the "Stages, Sights & Sounds" run. The Frank Maugeri double bill features Cape & Squiggle, the tale of an existentially wracked superhero, and Laika's Coffin, an ode to the Russian stray dog that became the first animal to orbit the planet. CHF recommends ages 8 and up; but "and ups" would be wise not to confuse Redmoon with kiddie goofs. If Cape/Laika carries a fraction of Cabinet's dazzlingly precise stagings-in-miniature, you'll be gobsmacked by the stagecraft.

Museum of Contemporary Art says…

Chicago Humanities Festival says: Fans of and newcomers to Chicago's Redmoon Theater are in for a treat. Stages, Sights & Sounds and Redmoon Theater present the premiere of a new multimedia shadow piece from Redmoon's artistic director Frank Maugeri. Cape & Squiggle endears us to a lapsed superhero as he ponders his mission and mortality. This piece will be presented with Maugeri's Laika's Coffin, an epic tale based on the biography of the doomed first animal in space. Soviet scientists and cosmonauts kidnap Laika, a child's dog, and send the poor pooch on a space mission that will shorten its life yet give it a unique view of the universe. In the show, five suitcases open to reveal remarkable miniature Soviet-inspired sets while an operatic narrator, three puppeteers, and a full chorus animate the melancholy saga.
