Iconoclastic director Kim Ki-duk emerged as perhaps the most celebrated Korean filmmaker of the last decade. At times, Kim has all but literalized his style of muted restraint: cult favorites such as 3-Iron and The Isle feature characters that barely utter a word. Whether he punctures that restraint with moments of scandalous shock (as in The Isle) or tethers it to cyclical naturalism (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring), he seems stronger the more his characters clam up. Dream (2008) is comparatively talky, but pet themes of incommunicability and hazy bonds are ever-present. Protagonist Jin visits the site of a dreamed car accident, finds a real one, and a bizarre cause-and-effect takes root. Kim also wrote the script for Rough Cut, which also screens as part of the "Korean Cinema on the Fast Track" Series.

Gene Siskel Film Center says…

Siskel Center says: With a story of unexplained phenomena and uneasy connections, Dream has all the hallmarks of a new film by Kim Ki-duk (The Isle, 3-Iron), Korean cinema's perpetual bad boy. Jin dreams that he wrecks his car while stalking his ex-girlfriend. Once awake, he visits the site of the accident and discovers that a woman, Ran, has crashed her car there, although she claims to have been asleep and dreaming at the time. Sleep brings the two together in a strange bond: Jin's dreams trigger Ran's actions. They resolve to stay awake no matter what it takes.
