John Parot: Hobbies
-
- John Parot, Two Pieces, 2010
John Parot's multimedia works on paper are a self-described "poetic investigation into urban gay living," where the artist mainly focuses on anonymous nightlife, signified by wild nocturnal animals, and, affectingly, men constructing identity and trying to connect through online dating and social networking. It's not what you're like, it's what you like, in Parot's collages, with commodified objects standing in for taste and personality in coldly geometric configurations. A generic parade of male faces from magazine cut-outs completes Parot's deconstruction of biography. Simultaneously, he reflects on his own with self-portraiture that lends real subjective depth to the show.
