“Following the Jeff-nominated Poseidon! An Upside Down Musical, this latest Hell in a Handbag production, based on Bette Davis' Marked Woman, offers more camp done right. Co-author David Cerda plays Scarlett Fontanelli, a towering 1930s madame with a body count to match, while lead Annie Gloyn carries the show as the nightclub's avenging moll. With drag and irony running wild, Lady X lovingly eviscerates a rogues gallery of gangster-dame tropes (the aging faded beauty, the corrupted innocent) while mocking and celebrating Hollywood's empowerment melodrama. The non-stop, rapid-fire dialogue — stuffed with meta jokes and hilarious vulgarity — absolutely crackles; and director Derek Czaplewski makes the most of Mary's Attic's small space, drawing some of the biggest laughs from resourceful staging and well-timed off-stage gags.”
