“Rachel Niffenegger's sculptures and paintings of disintegrated human heads create a kind of surrealist, horror-movie portrait gallery. Assembled busts reference classical sculpture, and disembodied heads are hyper-saturated with amalgamations of pigment and black smoke, using the surrealist technique of fumage. Niffenegger's aesthetic is intensely visceral and clinical, her "hall of heads" a torture gallery of mutilated heads; but it's also a formalist exploration of the texture and materials used in intuitive sculpture-making, applying everything from plaster, resin, and wax to sawdust and paper.”
