“The Art Institute's mashup of art and music through a wide grouping of photo and video is an untidy combination — in a good way. A well-chosen survey of work by artists like John Baldessari and Christian Marclay, examining the extremely broad question of how sound and vision have been embodied in the last few decades of contemporary art, Sound & Vision doesn't create easy harmonies (if you will) — but individual pieces' tensions and non sequiturs keep the show from being reduced to easy answers, making the show far more interesting and worthwhile an exploration thereof than if the curators had attempted obvious analogues in what they call the "symbiotic relationship between art and music."”
