“Chicago Imagist Roger Brown is perhaps nearly as famous in Chicago now as a collector of art, particularly for the Roger Brown Study Collection he donated to the Art Institute, a house museum with an incredible collection of self-taught artists; but Brown's own paintings are deeply important in their own right. Calif USA showcases Brown's dual role as collector of domestic objects as well as paintings they inspired: the Virtual Still Life series, shown for the first time. The curation of these two impulses — collecting objects and incorporating them into representation — promises to create a powerful echo chamber effect.”
