Starring comic musician Mike O'Connell as K. Roth Binew, The Living Wake tells the story of an obnoxious intellectual as he personally invites his enemies to a euphemistic "good-bye party," with help from his meek man-servant Mills (Jesse Eisenberg). Set in a timeless dreamscape, the film is witty, transgressive, and bittersweet, with a macabre humor recalling Harold and Maude and Woody Allen. The ego-bloated main character of Binew is also reminiscent of Ignatius J. Reilly, from John Kennedy Toole's Confederacy of Dunces; but the lyrically hyper-real screenplay, written by O'Connell and Peter Kline, is infused with elements of fantasy, yielding a morbid storybook feel that defies genre.

Facets Cinémathèque says…

Facets says: "The Living Wake is a dark comedy is about a self-proclaimed artist and genius, K. Roth Binew (writer Mike O'Connell), who has one day to live. He has enlisted his best and only friend, Mills Joquin (Jesse Eisenberg, Adventureland, The Squid and the Whale), to take him around on a bicycle powered rickshaw and in a final attempt to probe life's deepest mysteries, Binew endures one ridiculous trial after the next. He concludes his day with a final performance, his living wake, and on a makeshift stage in an open field, Binew's friends and enemies gather to witness his madness one final time. A completely original and charming comedy, The Living Wake is a film for everyone that knows, no matter what the evidence to the contrary, that they are the stars of their own stories. Also, featuring Ann Dowd and Jim Gaffigan."
