The influential American conceptual artist John Baldessari — gadfly to contemporary art theory and master of image-text paintings — is represented in this new retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Photography. The exhibition, on loan from a private collection in Portland, contains prints from the last 40 years or so, spanning the "post-painting" period that immediately followed Baldessari's early text paintings. The show contains pieces from several of the artist's language-games series, which self-consciously uses translation and image captions to impressive effect, mixing pure photography with hybrid prints.
