Howard Finster, often described as one of the most important folk artists of the 20th century, was an "outsider" artist whose work has been eagerly embraced by the so-called insider culture. Johnny Carson interviewed him on The Tonight Show, bands like R.E.M and the Talking Heads showcased his artwork on their album covers, and art critic extraordinaire Roberta Smith chronicled his passing. Creating over 46,000 pieces in his lifetime, Finster fashioned compelling visual narratives from discarded detritus, such as bottles, concrete, wood and metal surfaces, and paper scraps. These opinionated messages reference pop culture, historical figures, and everyday experiences, as well as broadcast his religious beliefs through text that bursts into every available surface.
