Tortoise are the Chicago music lover's perfect union between intellectual jazz and heartfelt indie rock. Blending an ever-evolving mix of conflicting time signatures and designed dissonance with explosive drums and fuzzy guitars, Tortoise have always offered an unpredictable dose of musical aptitude. The five-member, multi-instrumentalist group presents a musical merry-go-round of a performance live, with almost everyone playing everything at least once. They seem as appropriate kicking off the first night of World Class Jazz's Made in Chicago as they did opening last summer's Pitchfork Music Festival.

Millennium Park says…

Made in Chicago says: Tortoise kicks off the series with a world premiere, concert-length commission featuring Dan Bitney, John Herndon, Douglas McCombs, John McEntire and Jeff Parker along with Ed Wilkerson, Greg Ward, Nicole Mitchell, Jim Baker and Fred Lonberg-Holm. Unique in the world of contemporary music, the group is known for its boundless intellectual curiosity, unmistakable compositional voice and contradictory sound worlds.
