“Based on cast and crew alone, Victory Gardens' A Guide for the Perplexed is perhaps the most anticipated show of the summer season. It was written by Joel Drake Johnson, the longtime Chicago Dramatist who catapulted into theatergoers' larger consciousness with 2008's pitch-black dramedy Four Places — one of the best reviewed Chicago plays in recent years. Star power is covered, too, as Steppenwolf ensemble member Kevin Anderson (Nothing Sacred, Tony-nominated for a '90s Death of a Salesman revival) returns for a hometown run. In this premiere, Anderson is a recently released convict dealing with family dilemmas (natch) and an obsessive pen pal.”
Victory Gardens says: Kevin Anderson returns for a rare Chicago appearance in A Guide For The Perplexed, the newest play by the author of our 2008 smash hit Four Places. Anderson plays Doug, a newly released convict who takes up reluctant residence with his sister's husband, teenage son, and a tank of tropical fish. Doug's rehabilitation process, absurdly funny and heartbreakingly sad, is by no means limited to the ex-con. When his over-heated female pen pal arrives bearing gifts, the play explores the characters' mutual feelings of pain, guilt and fear which lead to a tenuous recovery, both hopeful and real. A Guide For The Perplexed also features favorite Chicago actor Francis Guinan.
