“In some ways, Juan MacLean is a traditionalist — a label tantamount to a malicious slur in many dance-music circles. He records and performs with a live drummer (RIP Jerry Fuchs); his new DJ-Kicks entry (!K7, 2010) is a live, hand-crafted mix heavy on '80s-flavored, deep vocal house; and if he thinks your of-the-moment headbang-house is homophobic, he'll say so. But if MacLean is a purist schoolmarm, we'll gladly take his courses any day of the week. He doesn't skew so retro as some claim (nearly everything on DJ-Kicks was issued last year). And if his tracks often sound like they were manufactured in the old Chicago Warehouse (see "Happy House," his still-fresh 2008 masterpiece single), you'd have to be top brass in the No Fun Police to think that's a bad thing.”
