The International Contemporary Ensemble make "classical" music feel current, if not downright cool. ICE is a veritable musical merry-go-round of young, ambitious talents, bent on revising the way we think about new music; the way in which it's performed; and the power it can hold. For ICE, collaboration is key, from commissioning work to educating youth in outreach programs. Depending on the piece at hand, the Ensemble may perform with as few as two or as many as all of its 40 members. They return to the MCA Saturday with "Roots and Return," a concert featuring work by new-music heavyweights John Adams and Pierre Boulez. Saturday's show marks the first in a three-part MCA residency.

MCA Chicago says…

The MCA Stage embarks on its first ensemble-in-residence with ICE, the bold young ensemble known for their exceptional talent and fearless choices. Three distinct programs are planned: a concert with works by John Adams and Dai Fujikara, Pierre Boulez, and Arnold Schoenberg (Sept 11); a portrait concert with related programs featuring John Luther Adams and guest conductor Steven Schick (Feb 26); and a concert featuring newly commissioned works by young composers Nathan Davis, Marcos Balter, and Du Yun (June 4).
