“In the mid-90s, doom-metal greats Sleep famously blew a sizable advance on amps and weed before handing their label Dopesmoker, a one-song, 60-minute ode to, well, you know, that their record company swiftly rejected. You could call the ordeal a Hammer of the Gods-worthy laffer if a) it didn't birth a modern metal classic and b) it didn't result in the band's premature breakup. (Dopesmoker was eventually released, unabridged, in 2003.) Band members have done fine work since splitting in 1997 — most notably guitarist Matt Pike in the faster (though compared to Sleep, that's everything) High on Fire; but for many, Sleep is still the peak. Tonight, the reunited trio (with Neurosis' Jason Roeder replacing original drummer Chris Haikus) plays sections of Dopesmoker along with the less extreme, though also beloved Holy Mountain (1992), in its entirety.”
