“The new paintings from Samantha Bittman on view at Thomas Robertello vibrate visually and materially. Visually they hum as tightly patterned paint blends with and resists the equally patterned "canvas" — often as full of color as a plaid, in this case the canvas is a hand-woven textile made by the artist. Step back from the intense visual engagement and one perceives the object as a fully integrated whole, with paint responding to the lead of the warp and weft of the canvas. While these works read as paintings, they also tease the borders of sculpture and fiber art, becoming a new, already complete hybrid.”
