Yes, there's an obligatory farewell to Rich Daley in the Second City's 99th mainstage revue, but after sending up politics and the economy in its past few shows, the comedy institution now pauses to reflect on broader issues of mortality, afterlife, and fate. South Side of Heaven employs the Judd Apatow playbook: the high-minded and the coarse get equal time, holding our attention by keeping things funny. The generally effective sketch-writing amounts to a showcase for the collective range of a diverse cast: Edgar Blackmon brings zany energy to the mainstage; another newcomer, Katie Rich, is appealing in too-small doses; and Timothy Edward Mason again shines, this time as a sheltered yuppie who's never been to the South Side of Chicago.

The Second City says…

South Side of Heaven is a thought-provoking, irreverent and hilarious new show from The Second City exploring the many fates that propel our world and universe. From the cultural divide between Cubs and White Sox fans to the delicate distinction between dancing and stripping, South Side of Heaven rejoices in the earthly and ethereal. A President, an outgoing Mayor and a creepy TSA agent are all just part of the natural flow of South Side of Heaven.
