Based on Elmer Rice's Pulitzer- winning play, Street Scene opened on Broadway in 1947 and was immediately recognized as a classic. The sidewalk outside a Manhattan apartment becomes the stage for comedy and drama, with the tenants as audience. New York City tenement life during the Great Depression forms the stark background for the story of Anna Maurrant, who seeks refuge from her loveless marriage…with tragic results. Street Scene is great music theater, with a large cast of singers, dancers, actors, and children, bringing in 1930s New York to life. Street Scene is presented through special arrangements with R&H Theatricals, Jay Lesenger, director; Robert G. Hasty, conductor; Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra.
